Halloween juhlat

Koska kukaan meistä ei ole syntynyt niin, että synttärijuhlia voisi pitää halloween hengessä, pidimme viikonloppuna halloween juhlat aivan erikseen. Leivoin kurpitsakakun, muffinsseja ja keksejä. Pyöreät jaffakeksit tuunasin valkosuklaalla. Kukkakimppuun laitoin hämähäkkejä kiipeilemään ja päähäni Tiimarista ostamani hatun. Muumiolyhdyt tein kieputtamalla sideharsoa lasipurkkien ympärille ja liimaamalla niille silmät. Muksuille tein pahvilaatikon kylkeen reiän ja maalasin sen kurpitsaksi. Sisään sai heitellä muovisia palluroita. Kotiin viemisiksi saivat vieraat vielä pikkupussukat, jotka koristelin musta-oranssisilla vermeillä ja täytin kekseillä ja tekohammaskarkeilla.

Because no one in our family is born in October, we cannot have birthday parties in Halloween spirit. So we decided to have a party just because it's Halloween. I made a pumpkin cake, muffins and cookies. Round chocolate cookies I decorated with white chocolate. On top of the flowers I put some spiders and on my head a little hat I bought from Tiimari. The mummy lanterns I made by rolling gauze around glass jars and glued eyes on them. For the kids I made a toss game from a cardboard box. Into the little white bags I put some cookies and vampireteeth candy for the guests to take home with them.

Kekkosen uudet lasit

En tiedä, mistä syystä olen höynähtänyt tähän jenkkien krääsäjuhlaan, mutta sille en vain voi mitään. Jo lukioaikoina kävin Tiimarissa etsimässä halloween krääsää. Toki sitä ei ollut tarjolla läheskään yhtä paljon kuin nyt.

Amerikan reissulla nappasin kyytiini tuota hämähäkin seittiä. Paketti on kestänyt seitsemän vuotta ja on vasta puolillaan. Pussin kyljessä komeilee Kmartin logo ja hinta 94 senttiä. Kyllä Kiinassa tehdyn seitin kilohinta on ihan eri täällä koto-Suomessa, kun sittarissa katsoin samanlaista pussia. Sen hinta oli 5,90 euroa.

Pyöreillä saksillani napsuttelin mustasta ja oranssisesta pahvista rinkuloita ja ompelin ne ompelukoneella nauhaksi. Ne roikkuvat ikkunalla, jossa patterista nouseva lämpö niitä kivasti liikuttelee.

Kekkoselle tein tuollaiset batman lasit. Aika sievät. Kekkosen kasvonpiirteisiin käyvät lasit kuin lasit.

I don't know why but I'm a fool for Halloween. I cannot help myself. Already in highschool I went to the stores looking for some halloween stuff. During that time there was not much to choose from.

From our trip to America I bought some halloween stuff including a bag of spiderweb. It has lasted seven years and there's still half left. Kmart logo is on the side of the bag and also a pricetag for 94 cents. The kilogram price for chinese spiderweb is totally different here in Finland. Similar bag costs "only" 5,90 euros.

With my round scissors I cut out circles for orange and black cardboard and sew them together as a garland. Now it's hanging form the window and the warm air coming from the radiators keeps moving them gently.

Our former president Kekkonen has also gotten batmanish shades.

Valoisa muisto

Muistoksi mummista halusin jotakin pysyvää. Jotakin, joka kestäisi vielä jälkipolvillekin. Jotakin valoisaa ja lämmintä kuten mummikin.

Kymmenen vuotta sitten ihastuin ja taisin vähän rakastuakin tähän Artekin valaisimeen. Käynti lamppukaupassa ja silmäys hintalappuun viilensivät tunteeni äkisti. Luulin, että järkeni oli tukahduttanut tunteeni lamppua kohtaan iäksi, mutta yhtä ihana se oli edelleen, kun uskaltauduin taas sitä liikkeeseen katsomaan. 

Siinä se nyt nököttää olohuoneen ahtaassa nurkassa odottaen pääsyä väljemmille vesille. Laitoin aluksi siihen energiansäästölamput, mutta äkkiä vaihdoin ne lämpimiin hehkulamppuihin. Valo siinä on tasaista ja runsasta.  Kaiken lisäksi tulen hyvälle tuulelle, kun sitä katselen. Voisi sitä siis rahansa pöllömminki käyttää, vai mitä? 

I wanted to get something permanent to remember my grandmother by. Something that'll last for generations to come. Something light and warm just like she was.

Ten years ago I think I almost fell in love with this floor lamp by Artek. A visit to the lampstore and a quick glance at the price tag suddenly cleared my affections. I thought that sense had won but the lamp was still as lovely as the first time I laid my eyes on it.

There it is. Standing in a crowded corner of our living room waiting for some wider space around it which it so desperately needs. First I screwed some energy efficient lamps to it but quickly changed them to regular warm light bulbs. The light is solid and there's lots of it. And on top of everything I get happy when I look at it. So I think it's a good place to put my money on, don't you think?

Opetustaulu ihanne pojasta

Ostin tämän Ihanne poika -julisteen Berliinistä täältä värikkäästä kaupasta eurolla. Koomisuudessaan se on niin viehättävä, että pakko se on saada pojusen tulevan huoneen seinälle. En tahtonut siihen tavallisia kehyksiä laittaa vaan löysin Vintagen Viemää -kirjasta ohjeen tällaiseen opetustaulu lookiin. Siitä tuli ihan kiva, mutta nuo nurkkaraudat ovat kyllä aivan liian paksut.

Täytyy muuten tunnustaa, että ostin tuon Katja Rinkisen tuunauskirjan alennusmyynneistä. Lainasin sen jo pariin otteeseen kirjastosta, joten totesin, että on se sellainen opus, joka on pakko olla myös omassa hyllyssä.

I bought this "Ideal boy" poster from this colorful store in Berlin for one euro. It's so comical that I just had to have it for our son's new room. I didn't want to put regular frame on it. So I made this educational board look-a-like from it with the help of a wonderful arts and crafts book called "Vintagen Viemää". It turned out ok but the corner trimmings are too wide.

I have to confess that I had to buy Katja Rinkinen's book for myself. After lending it from the library for two times I thought that it's a book that I have to have on my shelf.

Legoja hallin täydeltä

Kävimme poikasemme serkkujen ja tätinsä kanssa tänään PiiPoon järjestämässä legotapahtumassa. Olihan siellä katseltavaa ja ihmeteltävää aikuisellekin. Varmasti menemme uudelleen, jos ja kun tapahtuma taas järjestetään.

Today we visited a Lego event organized by PiiPoo. There was lots to see even for a grown-up. Surely we'll go again if and when the event takes place again.

Jo viime viikonloppuna testailin Yhteishyvän välissä tulleen thaimaalaisen lohipata reseptin. Maku jäi mielestäni vallan pliisuksi, vaikka poikanen sanoikin sen olevan kovin "äkevää". 

Already last weekend I tried this receipe from a magazine. Thai coconut salmon was a bit lame in my opinion even tough our son said it's strong to his liking.

Värikkäitä ihanuuksia

Käyn aina silloin tällöin Biltemassa ja joka kerta sieltä tarttuu jotakin mukaan. Eilen joukkooni lähtivät muun muassa nämä värikkäät lastenhenkarit. Niiden pinta on samettimainen, joten luulen pikkuisten vaatteidenkin pysyvän niillä hyvin. Hinta oli naurettavat 1,99 euroa/5 kpl.

Teippitarhasta tilasin muutaman teippurullan askarteluita varten. Toimitus oli jälleen kerran supernopea ja kotiin asti.

Työkaverini on lukenut blogiani ja hän toi minulle muutaman lahjan, jonka arveli sopivan kotiimme. Hänpä oli oikeassa. Pullonkorkit ja tulitikkupuntti ovat varsin viehättäviä, mutta eniten minua kiehtovat Fiskarsin valmistamat naulat. Kaikki on niin hienosti pakattukin, jotteihän niitä voi mitään avata. Kaikki ihanuudet olivat kuulemma löytyneet vanhan kyläkaupan loppuunmyynnistä jostain päin Suomen niemeä. Kiitos paljon!

Every now and the I visit Biltema and everytime I buy something. Yesterday I found these colorful clothes hangers for kids. They have a velvety surface so I think that even small clothes will stay on them. They cost ridiculous 1,99 euros for five.

From Teippitarha I ordered myself washitapes. The delivery was yet again superfast and straight to my door step.

A collegue of my had spent time reading my blog and had decided to give me a few gifts that he thought would suite our home. Boy was he right. The bottle caps and the matches are very inspiring but the nails made by Fiskars are so cool. All packaged so nicely that I will not open them. All of these he had found at an end sale of an old village store somewhere in Finland. Thank you so much!

Minkäs väristä nyt laitettaisiin?

Jos oli lattian harmaissa valinnan varaa, niin on sitten seinämaaleissakin. Värikarttoja ja lastuja on tuhottomasti ja jonseivät nämä riitä on kauppiaalla taas pelottavat viuhkat, joista löytyy ainakin miljoona josei kaksikin erilaista väriä lisää.

Kaksi huonetta uudella puolella tapetoidaan, tosin niistäkin vain yksi seinä, ja loput maalataan. Tummansininen autotapetti tulee pojan huoneeseen, vihreä kuviollinen vierashuoneeseen ja mustavalkeat puut liisteröidään tänne vanhalle puolelle tulevan työhuoneen seinään.

Vessaan laitamme samanlaiset laatat kuin on muissakin vessoissamme. Pienen pientä laattaa ei vain enää saanut, mutta onneksi sai edes tätä 10 senttistä. Se passaa mulle. Vessan seiniin laitamme paneelit vaakaan.

Ei yhtäkkiä tunnu, että paljoa enää puuttuu, mutta kyllä siinä vain silti vielä tekemistä riittää.

If there were a lot of choises in shades of gray, there sure are even more when it comes to wall paint. Endless amounts of colormaps and chips. And if the perfect color is not in those then the hardware dealer has the frightening books with million or two different shades more.

Two of the rooms are going to be wallpapered but only one wall and the rest will be painted. The dark blue car wallpaper is for our son's room, the green with patterns for the guest room and the black and white with trees is going to be put up in our old bedroom that's going to be transformed into a study.

The black and white tiles are going into our toilet. There are the same as the ones we have already in our other toilets but a bit bigger. They had stopped making the smaller size but luckily the still make this 10 centimeters tile. On the walls we'll put up painted wood paneling horizontally.

Suddenly it feels like there's not much left to do but when you start making a list you realize that there is still way to go.
